Living In My Truth
Born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1983, I decided early in life that I would pursue a career in mental health. I studied Psychology and completed my bachelors degree at Xavier University of Louisiana. From there, I went on to obtain my graduate and doctorate degrees from the University of Notre Dame.
After earning my doctorate in psychology at age 28, I began to feel the inevitable pressures of a life filled with the need to be PERFECT. FEAR and ANXIETY caused me to spend 14 hours at work each day. This resulted in sleep deprivation and isolation from my family and friends. Ultimately, this led to clinical DEPRESSION. On the verge of shutting down completely, In 2016 I decided to intentionally engage in SELF-CARE. I found myself having conversations with sisters who were equally, if not more, exhausted and overwhelmed. We all had a strong desire to make dynamic changes in our communities, but without self-care, we were limiting the impact we could have on our world.
Since then, I make a greater effort, daily, to just BREATHE. I intentionally devote time to reflect on my personal needs, and I no longer apologize for setting healthy boundaries. The result? My life has been forever changed. I was so inspired by the changes I saw in my own life, I decided to empower women and share pieces of my own self-care journey, and thus The Self-Care Doc was born.
Engaging in self-care reminds us that all is well, and that I am free to take care of myself…you are too!
I hope we can continue to embark on this journey together.
